This project investigates the shaping, dissemination and appropriation of nineteenth-century European musical discourse in Dutch periodicals. With the help of digital methods I will analyse macro-level shifts in the patterns of contemporaries’ semantic pallet and the micro-level applications in journalists’ critiques. By relating discursive developments in the Dutch national musical journal Caecilia (1844-1917) to various local newspapers from the Royal Library database I will compare the musical status of important Dutch creative cities and their interactions – highlighting the changing position of Amsterdam as cultural capital in relation to leading musical cities such as Utrecht, The Hague and Rotterdam.
