In the past, it was common to enrich your data, by adding other datasets to it. Usually by renaming, recoding and merging variables from the original datasets.
The resulting dataset, as well as the efforts in combining the data, often remained with the researcher doing the merging and as a result the same datasets have been merged over and over, but there’s actually little you can do today to benefit from those efforts. In contrast, Linked Data, is a new way of connecting data. By explicitly describing your data via vocabularies and putting your data online you add your data to ‘the Next web’ or ‘data web’. In addition to making your own data findable over the web, this technique has the advantage that you can borrow from the efforts of others.
For example, if you have country data and years, and you describe them as such with vocubaluries, you will be able to retrieve characteristics for those countries and years, for example, population size or GDP per capita.
This workshop teaches you how to transpose data to Linked Data and reap the advantages of the web of data, by adding datasets of others to your own. To do so, you will learn how to work with COW, a tool that transposes the data for you.
For those not familiar of writing ‘syntax’ or ‘code’ there’s a nice visual interface that you will be able to use after the workshop. For those already familiar with ‘code’, we will show how COW allows you to create scripts to transpose data to Linked Data. During the workshop we will focus on an example dataset, and we reserve some time for you to apply your newly learned skills to your own dataset. In addition, from the datasets that we receive from participants prior to the workshop, we will choose two datasets, for which we will provide additional sessions to complete the data transition to Linked Data.
To participate in the workshop, please send an email before February 19th, 2018 to Ruben Schalk, r.schalk AT uu.nl.
Please inform us in the email about your background (2-4 sentences) and if you wish to share your dataset with us prior to the workshop.
